ADVICE: How to get raccoons out of the attic
Raccoons, although cute in appearance, can be a real pain, especially when it comes to one living in your attic. They have a tendency to love human dwellings, and as well as crawling around in the upper levels of your home and generally making a nuisance of themselves, you will find that they also come with many other problems. Your pets will want to leave home when one of these creatures resides in your home, they often steal food, both human and pet, and they love to kick around in your chimney, sending soot and dirt flying everywhere!

There are three main ways that you will be able to get rid of a raccoon that has decided to call your home its comfy abode – repellents, prevention, and of course, trapping. As with most things in life, prevention is better than a cure, but it can’t always be done.

The most humane way to remove the raccoon from your attic is to trap it. This has some unfortunate side effects however, and may not always work. You may capture your poor beloved house cat instead of the raccoon. It might not even go anywhere near the trap – these creatures aren’t stupid after all. You may even find that you do manage to effectively trap it and the critter keeps coming back! This happens with a lot of animals, but if you do it the right way, with the right equipment, you can be sure that your raccoon problem is a thing of the past.

One thing that you will need to remember is that in most states, it is actually illegal to trap and then release some animals into the wild, which means that you will need to call a professional into help. You also need to remember that if you have a raccoon in your attic; there are often babies up there too, which again stresses my point of calling in a professional to help you. Once you remove the mother from the nest, you are going to end up with a load of baby raccoons that are basically starving to death, and this will attract other rodents as well, causing a much wider spread problem.

Of course, you could always go for a much harsher method and pretty much starve them out. Secure your garbage can lid down so the little critter can’t get into it. Make sure that you don’t leave your family pet’s food lying around – you can buy lids for the bowls, or just make sure that you don’t leave food around when the pet has finished eating. It’s actually not good to leave the food out anyway, so you will be looking after your pet at the same time. It’s very simple really – take whatever it is that draws the raccoon to your home out of the equation, and you will pretty much have solved your own problem – they will soon leave your abode for a much nicer place if they are not getting everything they need in order to survive.

Heavy scratching noise coming from the ceiling - what is it?
If you’re wondering what could be causing that heavy scratching noise in the ceiling, you might have a raccoon, an opossum, or even a rat. Don’t underestimate the way sounds amplify and travel in a home. Something like a rat can be as noisy as a raccoon. If you do have a raccoon, you will also hear some characteristic sounds like growling, chirping, and a vibratory call specific to baby raccoons. You will likely hear the sounds at any time of day, though they will be more pronounced at dawn and dusk. Raccoons will also have significantly larger holes for entry than will a rat. One of the best methods of determining what animal in your home without actually sneaking up into the attic is to go outside and examine your roof. If there is a large, damaged area, you probably have something larger than a rat. Most people never notice the holes rats use to get inside. If you’re still unsure, you can venture into your attic and try to locate some dropping. Raccoon poop looks a lot like small dog poop. There will be no mistaking it for rat poop.
